Getting your thoughts out of your head and into the world

Jun 02, 2023

Here's how to make sure your unique, powerful thoughts and creative ideas don't just stay in your head, or on your desk, or in some draft file somewhere - when they could be out there impacting the world.

Following the practice adopted by prolific creators like Irving Berlin who published 1500+ songs, Ella Fitzgerald, who released 84 albums, JK Rowling who wrote 7 novels in 10 years, and Woody Allen who made 68 movies.

The practice of "work to publish".

I watch this video by Patreon founder Jack Conte maybe once a year, as I find it SO Inspiring. This is the best possible motivation I have ever seen to remind us of the value of publishing our work vs. sitting on work trying to perfect it!

I was reminded of this whole philosophy of "work to publish" today as I sit here adding some more valuable insights into my 2023 Marketing Insights Report.

I don't let perfection get in the way of getting my work out there.

I published the first version of my Report last week - as a draft - complete with spelling mistakes, typos, mismatched formatting.

I wasn't fussed. In fact, maybe it was even part of the appeal that people could see my first draft, rather than the polished, final version.

And I'm so glad I did, as it's now in the hands of hundreds of people who otherwise wouldn't have that hugely valuable information.

As I sit here preparing a few more "must-know" insights for my report, one of these is centred around the statistics about how much content goes to waste.

It's staggering.

According to Forrester, 65% of content that's created (in B2B organisations) goes to waste because it's not even used!

An absolute travesty!

(the other reason for waste is that it's not findable! which is a whole other conversation but we'll have that another time!)

What a waste of time, money and resources. 65% of the budget allocated to content. Just wow.

Both of these are completely avoidable.

You might have experienced your own version of this too. So much content that is created doesn't get published.

You had some ideas but they got stuck in your head, in a notebook, in a Word document.

And perfection is often the enemy of publishing.

"Work to publish" is a philosophy I have adopted in the last few years.

And lived out as recently as last week.

Version 2 of my Marketing insights Report
has just been uploaded. It has an additional 10 compelling insights in addition to the 70 that were in the first version. (Plus just a teeny bit more polish.!)

There will be more changes. It's not final...... yet....probably never will be, in all honesty.

But the feedback around the value of the insights, has been overwhelming and so I'd encourage you to take a look, because I know you'll resonate too.

You can get V2 of the report here.

And watch this inspiring video by Patreon Founder Jack Conte below.

Then join me in embracing the "work to publish" mindset.
